Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions we hear most about training, boarding, and getting started.

What training methods do you use?

We use force-free, science-based training built on positive reinforcement — we set dogs up to succeed and reward the behaviors we want to see, rather than relying on punishment or corrections. Jenn Hirakawa is a Karen Pryor Academy Certified Training Partner (KPA-CTP, certification #97205), and that same approach carries through every program we offer, from private training and Board & Train to our working K9 programs and online courses.

What vaccinations are required?

For your dog's safety and the safety of every dog in our care, we require up-to-date vaccinations before training or boarding: Rabies, DHLPP/DHPP, Bordetella, and Corona. Dogs must also be heartworm negative and current on both heartworm prevention and monthly flea/tick prevention.

We verify vaccination status with your veterinarian. If records aren't current, we'll schedule an appointment with our veterinarian to get your dog caught up; a Time, Travel, and Sterilization fee applies in addition to the cost of the vaccinations and office visit themselves. Puppies who are too young for the full vaccine series are the one exception — we take extra precautions to keep them, and every dog in our care, safe.

How long are the training programs?

It depends on your goals. Training can be a single session, a full course, or several courses linked together in modules — whatever fits what you and your dog need. Board & Train programs range from one week to a month or more; see our Board & Train page for the specific options. If you're not sure what fits, contact us and we'll help you find the right plan.

Can owners tour the facility?

Absolutely — just give us a call to schedule a time. We ask that visits be scheduled in advance, not to keep anything from you, but so a tour doesn't interrupt training sessions or the outdoor rotation for dogs who are boarding with us.

What should dogs bring for boarding?

A little preparation goes a long way:

  • Food — enough to last the full stay, or we can arrange drop-off times if needed
  • Collar — flat buckle, martingale, halti, or a body/head harness (no prong or pinch collars)
  • Leash — needed to get from the car to the training center; we'll hang onto it during the stay
  • Up to two favorite toys — hard chew toys only, please; we can't guarantee soft toys will survive
  • Bed or blanket, if your dog prefers their own — we provide bedding, but we can't guarantee a favorite bed from home will come back in one piece
  • Medical records, including proof of vaccinations
What's your payment and cancellation policy?

Fees are due in advance of training, boarding, or Board & Train, and are generally non-refundable. Boarding can be canceled up to 72 hours ahead of a stay with no charge. Some services may carry additional fees — for example, if flea/tick prevention isn't provided at drop-off. Full terms are outlined in the service agreement you'll sign when you book; if you have questions about your specific situation, just ask.
